Optimizing networks – a one-time project or an ongoing process

Network optimization is of great topical interest but it is also a highly controversial issue, particularly in view of the methods of implementation used. Currently, there are two principal lines of thought which differ strongly in terms of their approach and in the IT tools they employ: the one-time optimization approach and the ongoing, manually supported process of improvement.

The one-time optimization approach strives to apply a mathematical method to achieve a new, optimal organizational solution for the production and logistics network. The goal is to determine an optimal supply chain structure, for example on the basis of a five-year plan or an expansion strategy. Projects adopting this approach are generally one-time projects implemented by central departments and with extensive support provided by external consultants; the concepts developed are usually implemented over a long-term period.

The ongoing approach , with a manually supported process of improving the supply chain structure, is based on a different concept. The primary objective is the development of a tool to provide support for a continuous process of improvement. The IT tools used must be relatively easy to understand so that the staff of the departments concerned are able to handle them without external assistance. Consequently, while the mathematical methods are important, it is also familiarity of planners with corporate processes and modeling that are crucial. As a rule, the solutions developed are not mathematically optimal. Rather they are tailored to achieve a corporate goal and are successively implemented while being continuously improved upon.

Both approaches to network optimization have their justification depending on the goals of the enterprise. j&m’s extensive experience in this field can assist and support you in the development of your optimization concept, in your choice of the appropriate IT tools and in the implementation of the solution within your company – whether as a one-time implementation or an ongoing process of improvement.

Will R/3 be completely replaced by ESA in five years?

The modular structure of Enterprise Service Architecture (ESA) provides hitherto unknown versatility for adapting IT architecture to business processes and not – as is so often the case – the other way around. SAP NetWeaver is the technological basis of ESA and links together all of the components of SAP-specific modules and customer-specific developments. Using SAP NetWeaver as your basis you have the possibility of integrating all processes and information from various sources. These can then be targeted to the needs of employees of the enterprise and made available to them through a portal.

Even today using Enterprise Service Architecture can make sense if you want to make your business processes more efficient and take advantage of savings potential.

j&m Management Consulting AG employs its know-how to support your customers in all areas of Enterprise Service Architecture and joins with you to develop a strategy for the integration of processes, information and people. With its long years of experience using all the technologies required j&m is also the right partner for their implementation.

Dr. Christoph Kilger is available at tel. +49-621 12 47 69 – 0 or by e-mail at christoph.kilger@jnm.de to answer any additional questions you may have about taking advantage of the potential in your enterprise.

Speech on the subject of “Traceability” at the Logistik World Conference 2004

At this year’s Logistik World 2004 conference in Bad Homburg, Germany, j&m presented the speech that had been highlighted in the lead-up to the conference by the event organizers, Management Circle:

"Traceability – adapting logistics procedures to ensure complete back-to-source tracking"

As well as dealing with issues such as the precise identification of goods using modern transponder technology (RFID), this speech also explained the effects on logistics processes throughout the supply chain and presented appropriate solution scenarios. In some industries (such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals and nutrition) there is an urgent need for action in the wake of changes in the law that now require goods to be traced back to their origins. The optimization of logistics processes and IT systems means that such tasks can now be accomplished with existing human resources taking advantage of modern and highly efficient technologies.

The event organizer and numerous participants later unanimously agreed that this presentation was a resounding success. Dr. Frank Jenner will be pleased to answer any questions you may have on this and related subjects. You can contact him at tel. +49-621 12 47 69 -0 or by e-mail at frank.jenner@jnm.de
